Rejuvenation treatments are starting younger these days, with women in their twenties now the boom market for Botox, but scientists have gone one better. They have developed a youthifying treatment for human eggs. Fifty-year-old eggs can be made to behave as though they were 20 years younger.

This raises the prospect of a 50-year-old egg, looking forward to a quiet retirement in the cosy old ovary, suddenly being spruced up and pushed out in the womb’s dating market, which they report is “pretty intense”, with male suitors “doing new kinds of dancing, basically wiggling, while I just stood there”.

OK, perhaps I am over-identifying with an ovum, but the real question it raises is: how will society look if and when women can have babies
