We all want better, brighter, and smoother skin—and many of us have spent a fortune on new miracle agents, cleansers, toners, moisturizers trying to achieve just that. But instead of adding yet another magic serum to your endless skincare routine, you may be able to attain that desired youthful glow with a popular facial treatment, known as HydraFacial.

So, where to start? We’ve consulted with expert dermatologists to get down to everything you need to know about this popular new facial technique and how to get one for yourself.

What is a HydraFacial?

HydraFacial is a non-invasive multi step resurfacing facial treatment that is specifically designed to refresh your skin without any downtime, says Ramya Garlapati, M.D., an LA-based skincare expert and board-certified dermatologist who practices both in the general cosmetic and aesthetics space. “It deeply cleanses and hydrates the skin for a more rejuvenated appearance.”

How does HydraFacial work?

The procedure is a four-step process that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and hydrates the skin.

HydraFacial “uses a wand to gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin, preparing it for the extraction that occur through painless suction followed by infusion of customized boosters that hydrate and nourish the skin,” says Peterson Pierre M.D., board-certified dermatologist at the Pierre Skin Care Institute. He adds that the gentle suction that occurs through the wand provides for a deep cleansing, a mechanical exfoliation and an infusion of customized boosters to enhance the appearance of your skin.

It utilizes a unique technology that generates a fluid vortex to cleanse and exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells and debris to effectively provide a deep cleanse, says Dr. Garlapati. “Extractions are done to painlessly remove white and blackheads, which is followed by applying a booster serum that is customized to address your specific skin concerns.”

A HydraFacial can also be combined with other non-invasive treatments such as Botox, filler and specific lasers to optimize overall results, says Dr. Garlapati.

HydraFacial benefits and risks

As with any facial treatment, what we really want to know is the end result.

The benefits of HydraFacial include cleansing and hydrating dry skin, unclogging pores and reducing acne, and overall improving skin tone and texture, says Dr. Garlapati. “Hydrafacial is a safe procedure that is painless, non-irritating, does not require any downtime and can be done on all skin types.”

With benefits including soft, smooth, and glowing skin, it’s the ideal treatment right before a big event to get you red carpet ready, says Dr. Pierre. “In experienced hands, there are virtually no risks. Hydrafacials can benefit everyone!”

However, if you are pregnant, you may want to skip this procedure, “as some of the actives used in the booster serums may contain ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy, but this should be discussed with your OBGYN and dermatologist,” says Dr. Garlapati.

Where to get a HydraFacial

So now that you know all the benefits of HydraFacial, you’re probably wondering how to get a treatment for yourself!

According to Dr. Garlpati, Hydrafacials can be performed by a trained and licensed esthetician or dermatologist and are performed at medical offices. Dr. Pierre adds that most medspas will also offer the treatment.
