The title of Ruben Östlund’s Oscar-nominated Triangle of Sadness can be read in two different ways, but both meanings are reflected in the movie.
The name of Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or-winning movie, Triangle of Sadness, has two clever meanings. Like Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion and Mark Mylod’s The Menu, Ruben Östlund’s first feature film in the English language criticizes the elite from a dark comedy perspective starring an ensemble cast in a one-location setting. This time, the oblivious cast of characters awaits their comically tragic fate aboard a superyacht, piloted by Woody Harrelson’s eccentric Captain Thomas Smith.
Like in Glass Onion and The Menu, it’s clear from the start that all passengers are spoiled in their privilege. Although they have every luxury on the ship, their self-indulgent requests expose their permanent lack of satisfaction, which eventually ends up transforming into actual misery when tragedy strikes. This sense of empty affluence, coupled with the story’s setting, is subtly reflected in the title “Triangle Of Sadness.”
The Triangle Of Sadness Movie Title Has Two Meanings
“The Triangle of Sadness” is real-world term for the area between the eyebrows and the very top of the nose bridge. The area terns to develop wrinkles with age and emphasizes negative facial expressions such as sadness or anger, even when the person’s face rests in a neutral position. This issue can be temporarily reversed by a skilled surgeon with low amounts of carefully placed Botox. However, the word “Triangle” in the title of the Oscar-nominated movie also references the infamous Bermuda Triangle, an area of the Atlantic Ocean between Miami, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda popular throughout the decades for the unexplained number of planes and ships that have disappeared inside it.
Why Triangle Of Sadness’ Two Meanings Work Together
Neither Botox nor the Bermuda Triangle have an actual sizable role in Triangle of Sadness‘ plot. However, they do have a strong symbolical connection with the events of the movie. First, the vain, ostentatious passengers see bigger problems where there are none, just as a person’s “Triangle of Sadness” makes it look they are sad or upset when they aren’t. And although the passengers have all the resources to fix their superficial problems, the passengers end up using their time, energy, and power to bring themselves actual trouble as Triangle of Sadness‘ ambiguous ending approaches.
Second, the yacht ends up capsizing, almost sending the passengers to the unknown depths of the ocean that so many ships have allegedly been transported to when they enter the Bermuda Triangle. In Triangle of Sadness, of course, this doesn’t happen because of the Bermuda’s Triangle paranormal qualities, but because a group of pirates blows up the ship once the Captain, the crew, and the passengers are too sick and beaten up to react. When the characters’ vanity and the movie’s setting align, they cause a perfect recipe for disaster in which superficial worries turn into real tragedy — and all because they don’t simply accept their figurative forehead wrinkles.
