EXPENSIVE Botox injections and face lifts that can go horribly wrong – the two things we usually associate with trying to look younger.
But according to two professional hairstylists, the miracle answer to a more youthful appearance could be in how you part your locks.
To find out the multiple ways you can style your parting and the ones that will only add years to your face, Fabulous spoke to Martin O’Sullivan, Company Director at O’Sullivan’s, and Carole, Senior Stylist at the boutique hair salon.
Centre parting
What it is:
Arguably one of the most popular ways to part your hair. Chic and sleek, centre parting is loved by many, including Kate Middleton, who uses this hairstyle to take years off her face.
Expert comment:
Martin says: ”Centre partings can very harsh if you have lines on your forehead and can definitely be ageing.”
Carol agrees, adding that this is a no-no parting if you have a bigger nose, as it will only draw attention to it, making it appear larger.
Side parting
What it is:
Just as favoured is the side parting. But whilst some believe it will give a more young-looking appearance, one mum was in shock after her daughter said the side parting made her look ”old”.
Expert comment:
Carole explains: ”A side parting will soften your features and is best if you have prominent nose to soften the look.”
Martin agrees: ”Side partings, particularly with a slightly longer side fringe, will soften the look.”
Zig zag parting
What it is: With the 2000s making a comeback, the parting that used to be all the rage 20 years ago is becoming more trendy than ever.
Like the name suggests, it involves taking a comb and parting your in a zig zag line.

Carole says: ”A throwback to the ‘00’s’ ,a zig zag parting will help cover up a regrowth and leave you with more time between colours.’’
Other Dos & Don’ts
According to the two beauty gurus, there are also other hair secrets to keep in mind when searching ways to look younger.
Expert comment:
Martin says: ”Dramatic cuts and styles with exaggerated partings tend be the most unflattering as we get older. Remember Fleabag.
He goes on: ”Layers, long or short, are always flattering and lend themselves to being easy to manage with soft, directional partings that are very easy to style.
”Very blunt and very short fringes can be ageing and aren’t recommended and should especially be avoided if you have a large forehead or a particularly small one.”
