Age really only matters when describing cheese and wine. But if we must mature, then we might as well do so with grace … and with a little help from technology and products. Of course, we know a good cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen are the basis of any healthy skincare routine. However, if you’re looking to maintain that youthful glow beyond the basics, here are some anti-aging products and procedures to consider in the battle to keep your skin healthy, luminous and downright gorgeous.

At-Home Technology Worth a Double Take

ageLOC LumiSpa

Scores of beauty influencers are smitten by the ageLOC LumiSpa by Nu Skin. The rechargeable cleansing device is touted to cleanse like a champion, remove makeup and other debris better than other methods, reduce fine lines, and slow visible signs of aging. Each medical-grade silicone head is made specifically for various skin types (normal, sensitive, blemish-prone, and oily). The device is pricey, starting around $200, and is available for purchase via the brand’s website or any of its brand ambassadors.

NuFACE Trinity

An at-home facelift? It sounds too good to be true, but according to NuFACE, it’s only the beginning. The NuFACE Trinity, named by Allure as one of the best beauty products of 2020, is a facial toner that helps to contour and smooth the face and décolletage. It is recommended to be used daily for up to 20 minutes per session. Through a microcurrent, the device offers what’s described as a “slight sensation” to stimulate the skin. The device has sold out on QVC repeatedly and has rave reviews on sephora.com. At $325, it’s not for everyone, but it is definitely on my wish list.

Aira Ionic Facial Steamer

If you’ve ever had a facial, you probably agree that the best part is the warm steam on your face throughout your session. Now, you can get that same experience at home with your own facial steamer. The Aira Ionic Facial Steamer has more than 500 reviews on Amazon and nearly five stars. The steamer aids in blood circulation and even makes your skin more receptive to the products you are using. Not to mention, it’s a great way to increase moisture, especially in the depths of winter. To see full benefits, use the device no more than twice per week. According to experts, any more than that could irritate your skin. The Aira Ionic Facial Steamer is available on Vanity Planet for $59.99.

Products to Keep on Hand

Products tailored to your skin

Just like a workout routine or diet, skincare is not one-size-fits-all. Experiment independently, keeping your individual needs in mind. For example, I was once a loyal Pixi Glow Tonic toner user until I realized it was one of the main culprits in my hyper-pigmentation. I switched to a glycolic toner instead and have never been happier. Smaller, spa-centric brands such as Pure MD make products that work for various skin conditions, including the effects of aging. On their site, you can shop by specific skin concerns, skin types, or maturity. Need something to combat redness? Try the Red Surrender serum. Looking to improve dark circles? Snag a bottle of High Eye Q. Either way, consider your own skincare needs versus the needs of the masses.

Retin-A

This is likely not the first time you’ll hear about the importance of Retin-A, nor is it likely to be your last. However, according to Molly Sipp, a cosmetic injector at Facial Aesthetics of Buckhead in Atlanta, this is the product to help combat aging: “In your 40s, 50s and 60s, you are going to wish you had started in your 30s!” Retin-A is a vitamin A derivative and can help reverse the signs of aging. Molly continues, “Differin Gel is a great over-the-counter product. Because the price point is a bit low, it may take a little bit longer to desensitize your skin to it; the more emollients in the product (to make it more tolerable), the more expensive a product gets. But no question, it is worth every penny!” Differin Gel is less than $15 and available at Target.

SiO FaceLift

Cooling, gentle under-eye patches have long been a beauty go-to, but when you apply that same concept to the rest of your skin, even more magic happens. SiO FaceLift is a pack of medical-grade silicone patches that give skin much-needed hydration while improving wrinkles. Tried-and-true eye patches are a part of the pack, but there’s also a forehead patch as well as one for the neck to help smooth the cumbersome area just below the chin. SiO claims results in as little as a few hours, too! The reusable set is $49.95 on their website.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is another must-have anti-aging product to keep in your arsenal. “Vitamin C helps brighten your complexion while protecting your skin,” explains Dr. Jenny Sobera, MD at Village Dermatology in Birmingham, AL. There are a ton of vitamin C products on the market, ranging in price. “Unfortunately, most stable vitamin C-containing products carry a hefty price tag, but your skin will thank you because quality vitamin C products last a long time as not much is needed with each application,” adds Dr. Sobera. Her number one suggestion is Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, which is available for $166 at skinceuticals.com.

Professional Procedures Getting a Round of Applause

Microneedling with radiofrequency

According to Dr. Marisa Lawrence, MD, FACS of Marisa Lawrence Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, microneedling is one of the best ways to keep your skin looking flawless. At her practice, the technology of choice for microneedling is The Intensif. The device uses 25 gold-plated microneedles that — coupled with heat — produce no bleeding or bruising (it’s also a lot more comfortable than other treatment devices). “The tiny needles stamp into the skin. As [the device] stamps, it creates damage that your body repairs by making new collagen,” explains Dr. Lawrence. “The heat of the radio frequency that’s emitted as the point penetrates the skin tightens the collagen that’s already there.” The results give you tighter, younger-looking skin. Dr. Lawrence recommends at least three treatments, which at her practice, begin at $300 per session.

Laser treatments

What was once a trend of its own has quickly turned into a mainstay in the world of anti-aging skincare. Using heat, laser treatments target a specific area in the skin to improve tone, texture, unwanted pigmentation, scarring and more. Dr. Sobera explains further, “An additional benefit [to laser treatment] is collagen remodeling, which makes laser a very effective overall anti-aging treatment.” Since collagen helps skin keep its elasticity, collagen turnover is a good thing. Dr. Sobera says to seek a specialist who will help you find the right treatment for your skin. “Some skin types are not suitable for certain lasers, so be sure your laser provider is well-trained and qualified to lessen your risk of unwanted side effects,” she says.

“Baby” Botox

To be honest, I have been Botox’s biggest skeptic. In fact, when my friends, and even my sister, who is 10 years my junior, claimed they were on the Botox train before turning 35, I silently judged them. I couldn’t understand starting something like Botox at such a young age. However, with the help of Dr. Lawrence, I’m here to say I am a changed woman and a Botox believer. There is increasing support for beginning Botox in your 20s or 30s as a preventative measure to stop wrinkles and fine lines from getting worse. Then, as you age (thanks to all of these awesome tips!), you’ll need fewer units to maintain the look. “Botox is good [for a younger audience] because they don’t ever develop wrinkles in their foreheads or around their eyes,” says Dr. Lawrence. “You just use enough to soften the muscle movement. If you continue to help the muscles not move as much, you won’t get those lines.” Pesky lines be gone!

Here’s to healthier, more youthful-looking skin!
