I love sesame for its irresistibly chewy smack. Inside each teeny seed is a freight of plant-based calcium. Woo-hoo!

So these sesame bars might be a great option for your tea break if you’re trying to ditch the biccies.

Then there’s also vitamin E, head coach for flawless skin. Yep. In Hinduism, the sesame seed often represents immortality. This is possibly because of its stash of plant lignans and other compounds such as vitamin E and phyto-oestrogens that power healthy bodies.

At just €3 a kilogram, sesame seeds are so much cheaper than Botox. Immortality, indeed!

Dark Chocolate Sesame Bars

Serves 16
You will need:

100g oats
130g sesame seeds
125ml honey
2 tablespoons butter or extra-virgin coconut oil
125g dark chocolate, melted
Pinch of flaky sea salt


1 Shoot up your oven to 180C, (160C fan), 350F, Gas 4. Line a 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) regular brownie tin with non-stick parchment paper. Set the tin aside while your oven heats up.​
2 Combine the oats and the sesame seeds on a large roasting tray. Bake them for 18 minutes in your preheated oven, and remove once cooked.

3 Add the honey to a saucepan, bring to a frothy boil for 1-2 minutes, but no longer. Pop in the butter or extra-virgin coconut oil, whichever you’re using. Stir this melted emulsion into your roasted sesame and oats (be careful, as it is hot!) Push the mixture into your pre-lined tin, and smooth it down using the back of a spoon or another piece of parchment. No baking is required as the honey will solidify and set with its contents.​
4 Pour the melted dark chocolate over, and sprinkle with a little pinch of flaky sea salt. As soon as the chocolate hardens, break into shards — or cut into bars, if you prefer — and tuck into lunchboxes. If you’re not munching straight away, then you can store the sesame bars in a brown paper bag in the fridge for up to a fortnight.
