The Laser Solutions Medical Spa & Weight Loss Center of Arkansas offers its patients nonsurgical weight loss procedures as well as cosmetic procedures to address both health and beauty concerns, the business’s website says.

Dr. Russell Gornichec retired as a surgeon around 20 years ago. With a specialty in surgical weight loss, Gornichec and his wife, Kim, the office manager of the clinic, opened the Med Spa in 2019 to offer patients more options when it comes to losing weight.

“Initially, I started out as a general surgeon,” he said. “And then got into cosmetic surgery and then surgical weight loss. And then as time went by, we decided in 2019 to stop offering surgical intervention. And so I offer nonsurgical options, both cosmetically, aesthetically and for weight loss.”

Although Gornichec does not operate anymore, he does still refer some patients to surgeons or other medical professionals depending on their needs or wants. He also helps with the aftercare of many patients who do have weight loss surgery.

He also offers “aesthetic” procedures including laser hair removal, microneedling, skin tightening and Botox.

“We don’t have a fixed program,” he said about the weight loss side of his business. “Try and keep it as open-ended as possible to allow people the flexibility to come when they need to get advice and when they need prescription medications for appetite control.”

Although the business is one entity, Gornichec said, the two names are meant to portray the different services they offer. The “Laser Solutions Medical Spa” is meant to portray the cosmetic technique options, while the “Weight Loss Center of Arkansas” portrays the nonsurgical weight loss options they offer.

Gornichec was licensed as a surgeon in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Indiana after finishing medical school through the University of Texas Southwestern and his residency through Baylor University in Dallas.

He used to work as a surgeon in Hot Springs at what’s now known as CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs and decided to return after his days as a surgeon came to an end.

“Just decided when we returned and opened up in 2019, we wouldn’t offer any surgical options at that point,” he said. “I still see my patients and other surgeons’ patients for follow-ups to help them along their goals, but I don’t do any of the surgical intervention.”

Gornichec has offered nonsurgical options to patients for the entirety of his career, he said. One of the reasons behind his retirement from surgery included his frustration with insurance assistance.

“Most health insurances in Arkansas don’t cover obesity treatments and I’m hoping that’s going to change,” he said.

“That’ll help both surgeons and nonsurgeons treat people with obesity issues.

“I miss being able to treat some diseases surgically; it’s very satisfying. But nowadays, it’s kind of overcome with a lot of the liability issues and a lot of the insurance negotiations that it’s becoming more of a headache for not just surgeons, but all providers.”

Gornichec always wanted to run his own practice, he said. Although he doesn’t make as much income as he used to as a surgeon, he said he measures his success in happiness.

“Are you happy? Are you sleeping at night? Do you have the ability to do things you want to do? And yes, I do all that,” he said.
