‘Rebecca Gibney’s Instagram post about honesty around cosmetic procedures should inspire us all’: Shelly horton | Opinion

This is basically a love letter to Rebecca Gibney. She’s an Australian sweetheart and icon. I absolutely adore her, and everything she does.

She is one of those fabulous celebrities whose kindness and good soul actually shows through her eyes. I love her daggy dancing videos, I love her love for her mum Shirl, and yesterday I fell even more in love with her and her raw social media posts.

Gibney, 57, took to Instagram to combat throw-away comments from people saying she has hardly aged, or ‘ages backwards’, sharing that she in fact has had a lot of things done to look as fabulous as she does.

Out loud and proud to her almost 200,000 followers, Gibney shared two photos of herself, one edited and taken front-on and another unedited from the side, showing her fine lines.

She shared in the caption that not only has she changed her lifestyle as she has aged – quitting smoking over 20 years ago, stopping drinking and cutting out junk food – she also gets Botox, has “had every skin treatment under the sun” and even liposuction on her neck.

And to this confessional I say, “Amen, sister!”

Gibney wrote in her post that she isn’t “interested in looking 35 anymore” but is keen on making the best of what she has, and to me, that’s exactly what it’s all about.

You take your car to be serviced and detailed, so why not your face? Surely microdermabrasion is the same as a buff and polish, and the change of a flat tyre can be likened to a bit of Botox or a plump or suck here or there.

It’s time to stop hiding or lying about the procedures and treatments that make you feel like a better version of yourself, and embrace them!

And the same goes for judgement of other people – I say, if you can afford it and it makes you feel good, do it. If you can’t afford it or don’t want to do it, then don’t. But also, don’t then compare yourself to someone who’s had tweaks.

I am the first to share on my social media everything I’ve ever had done: Botox, filler, dying my hair, eyelash extensions, tattooed eyebrows, liposuction, gastric lap banding (which didn’t work and I hated, so after a year of vomiting and feeling ill I had it removed), not to mention the Instagram filters we all nonchalantly slap onto every photo we post.

You don’t frame photos at home where you look like crap. Instagram is the same – you put up the ones you like. Sometimes I like putting up sweaty makeup-free shots and sometimes the Channel Nine glam squad have worked so hard it’s almost like special effects!

Plenty of fans and fellow celebrities praised the post, with cheers from Samantha Armytage, Rhonda Burchmore, Janine Allis, and also the fabulous Julia Morris, who shared a similar sentiment in 2021 when she posted about her eyelid surgery on her Instagram.

“What a glow up for this 53yr old. Not [a sponsored post] but deep admiration for a brilliantly gifted Plastic Surgeon & a hellava wonderful man. Eye beef removal/brow lift,” the Australian host/comedian/actress/superstar wrote on her Instagram, later adding on Instagram Live, ”I would have to sleep for 30 years to look so fresh.”

Tracy Grimshaw added to Gibney’s post: “As Cher famously said, ‘It’s my body and if I want to wear my tits on my back I will'”, which is bloody hilarious!

The truth is you have to deal with a lot getting older as a woman; menopause, weight gain, mood swings. So, the last thing you need is more pressure to be ageless, or to feel guilty or pressured to lie about anything you choose to get done.

It seems a stretch that 55-year-old Nicole Kidman claims her beautiful skin is just thanks to a lot of water and sunscreen. Nikky K, I love every role you play, but we’ve all seen BMX Bandits – where did those freckles go and where did those lips come from?

Lying about getting work done, no matter how minor, is setting up unrealistic beauty ideals and I am not here for it.

This isn’t the first time Gibney has taken to social media with brutal honesty about her body, sharing in 2021 that the 15 kilograms she gained for a role nine years prior had only just come off. She also shared that while the rapid weight gain almost pushed her to be diabetic and insulin resistant, she wasn’t in a rush to lose it.

“While I have managed to lose some weight and tone up, I still have loose skin, cellulite, wobbly bits, wrinkles, freckles, age spots – you name it. I’m a mum, I’m over 50 and things will never be what they were and that’s ok. Because what’s important is I feel healthier and fitter than I have in a long time,” she wrote at the time.

“Most importantly I am happy because I am taking care of me in my own time and at my own pace and I’m not trying to ‘attain’ anything.”

I think we need to be more like Rebecca Gibney and Julia Morris. It’s completely fine to give the old foundations a little bit of a reno – but also, take a leaf from their book and be kind to yourself and others.

Don’t do the whole ‘compare and despair’ thing on Instagram. We’ve been told over and over again, social media is a highlights reel, not a true representation of someone’s life (or their face).
