The FDA just approved a unique botulinum toxin A (BoTX-A) called DAXXIFY™ that lasted an average of six months in research subjects. I performed the research trials that led to its FDA approval, so I have been using it for about two years on research subjects.
This new neurotoxin is used to treat the “11” frown lines between the brows and will work the same way as BOTOX Cosmetic®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau®, which all use BoTX-A to relax the muscles.
What makes DAXXIFY different?
Daxxify is the first neurotoxin to have a small piece of a protein called a peptide attached to it.
This peptide stabilizes the toxin and helps the BoTX-A bind to the target receptors. This may lead to more precise placement of the toxin because of reduced diffusion.
DAXXIFY is also free of albumin, a protein that can be animal- or human-derived and known to cause flu-like symptoms in some people. DAXXIFY seems to last longer than other BoTX-A products on the market.
What did the research trials of DAXXIFY show?
The US approval of DAXXIFY was based on the data generated in the Phase 3 clinical trial, which included more than 2,700 patients and approximately 4,200 treatments.
In these trials:
▪ 98% of subjects had “none” or “mild” wrinkle severity in the 11 frown lines (known as glabellar lines) at week 4, per the research investigator’s live assessment.
▪ The median duration of results was six months.
▪ Some patients still had fewer frown lines at nine months.
▪ The improvement of 11 lines was typically seen within two days.
Side effects of DAXXIFY
The side effects are similar to those seen with other BoTX-A, such as headache (6%) and ptosis (2%).
How much does DAXXIFY cost?
We do not yet know what the cost of this new injectable anti-aging treatment will be.
DAXXIFY is now the fifth type of BoTX-A on the market. These biologic medications have revolutionized the anti-aging market. But remember, you must inject them. At this time, there are no skin creams that work the same as BoTX-A because they cannot penetrate into the skin to reach the target receptors.
DAXXIFY is not yet available in your doctor’s office but is coming very soon.
