After a long winter of icy weather and cancelled plans, U.S. consumers are ready—yet again—to get back into business and socializing for Spring 2022. Beyond the standard moisturized facial base and nourished tresses, shoppers will seek out new makeup and hairstyling products from beauty brands spanning from indie to big business. Paula Floyd of Headkount, a leading authority on beauty at retail based in Bend, OR, took time to chat with Happi.com about what’s next for our industry this season.

Happi: What are the latest developments in beauty right now? And what ingredients fuel their formulations?

PF: The search for products with hyaluronic acid continues. This has been on the rise since 2019 and continues to grow in popularity, whether you’re a skin care brand like The Ordinary, offering a Hyaluronic Acid 2% + BF Serum, or a color brand like Kosas with its successful Kosasport LipFuel Hyaluronic Lip Balm. Both are truly outperforming others in the same space. This high performing ingredient has doubled in popularity from 2019 to today and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Happi: What will be big in 2022 for beauty and why?

PF: Glam is on the rise, people want to “get ready” again and go out. The complexion, hair and lip category will drive this momentum. For hair, everyone wants an everyday blowout look, but many don’t have the time or money or know-how to get it done, so they are becoming professionals themselves. Products like Perfect Smooth Blowout Lotion by NatureLab Tokyo (NLT) create an effortless pro look at home. NLT has over two decades of experience in beauty.

Additionally, in terms of complexion products, foundations like Lawless Conseal The Deal offer a full coverage formula that is lightweight. The lip is also back! Haven’t many of us already purchased more than we did a year ago? No surprise there since many of us are venturing back out into the public eye!

Happi: And, because indie beauty is so key to our industry, what makes an independent company successful in today’s market?

PF: Indie brands succeed because their founder has an ability to create innovative products and build a strong community rich in culture. They take time to invest in their people, just as they do in finding the perfect formula.

The indie brands making it happen today don’t wait—they seek ways to improve and pull the trigger on investments to accelerate growth. Create your culture, build a team of advisors you respect and invest in your company.
