Aligarh, April 18: A patient with injured left brachial plexus came out fine through the surgery performed by renowned Gurugram based plastic surgeon from the Medanta Medicity, Dr Vimalendu Brijesh in a live workshop on ‘Brachial Plexus Reconstructive Surgery’ of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Assisted by JNMC surgeons—Dr Fahud Khurram, Dr Sarfaraz, Dr Somnath and Dr Sudanshu and anaesthetist, Dr Nazia Tauheed in the surgery shown to professional medical audiences; Resource person, Dr Vimalendu demonstrated microsurgery techniques for repairing injured muscles and tendons and restoring sensation and movement in the arm, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.

With the Trapezius Muscle Transfer Operation, Dr Vimalendu successfully re-established the shoulder function of the patient who had lost all functions of the left upper limb in an accident.

He showed various exposure incisions, repairing techniques and different nerve transfers to the workshop participants.

Earlier in the extension lecture on ‘Management of Brachial Plexus Injuries’, Dr Vimalendu delineated aspects related to brachial plexus injuries.

He emphasised: “Most serious brachial plexus injuries occur when the nerve root is torn from the spinal cord. Signs and symptoms of more-severe injuries can include weakness or inability to use certain muscles in your hand, arm or shoulder”.

Dr Vimalendu pressed the need for timely intervention and clinical examination in such cases.

Prof Arshad Hafeez Khan (Chairman, Department of Plastic Surgery) delivered the welcome address and discussed various types of Brachial Plexus Surgeries for Nerve Repair, Decompression and Neurolysis, Nerve Grafting, Tendon Transfer and Functional Muscle Transplant among others.

“The workshop helped the participants understand how these surgeries are performed by multidisciplinary teams of plastic surgeons, neurologists and neurosurgeons”, said Prof Imran Ahmad.
