LG Household & Health Care has discovered seven genes involved in Koreans’ skin pigmentation.



LG Household & Health Care announced on Feb. 22 that it has discovered seven genes involved in Koreans’ skin pigmentation. The company plans to apply this discovery to the development of customized whitening cosmetics.

The company’s research institute has built big data on the skin characteristics and genetic information of about 50,000 Koreans. As a result, the lab found seven skin genes involved in pigmentation. It has filed for patents related to the discovery.

Of the seven genes, two are pigmentation genes discovered for the first time in the world. The institute believes that they are highly likely to act specifically on Koreans’ skin.

Existing whitening cosmetics can suppress or reduce the production of melanin pigments due to ultraviolet rays, but they cannot control the production of melanin pigments due to innate genes. For this reason, even if the same product was used, there were differences and limitations in improving pigmentation depending on the individual’s skin characteristics.

LG Household & Health Care is also developing a diagnostic platform that predicts the degree of pigmentation in the future through customer genetic information and recommends skin care methods suitable for individuals while studying the efficacy ingredients that can selectively control the functions of the newly discovered genes. Through this, it is planning to launch a comprehensive customized skincare solution that ranges from skin diagnosis to cosmetics provision based on diagnosis results.

The results of this study were published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, an international academic journal in the field of dermatology.
