Kaia Gerber knows she’s a nepo baby—but she declines to give into the negative connotation associated with the now-trending term.

The model—who made her runway debut in 2017, and has since become a Fashion Week regular, a Celine muse, and starred in major brand campaigns around the world—addressed the root of her industry success in a new interview for ELLE.

(A nepo baby is “a child of a famous actor/celebrity who got famous due to nepotism,” per Urban Dictionary.)

When asked how she deals with talk that the names of her famous parents, iconic supermodel Cindy Crawford and model and businessman Rande Gerber, helped launched her into the spotlight, Gerber responded honestly. “I won’t deny the privilege that I have,” she told the magazine.

“Even if it’s just the fact that I have a really great source of information and someone to give me great advice, that alone I feel very fortunate for,” she continued. “My mom always joked, ‘If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you.’ But I also have met amazing people through my mom whom I now get to work with.”

Despite admitting that her family’s notoriety gave her a push into the modeling industry, Gerber doesn’t believe the same necessarily goes for her burgeoning acting career.

“With acting, it’s so different. No artist is going to sacrifice their vision for someone’s kid. That just isn’t how art is made, and what I’m interested in is art,” she said. “Also, no one wants to work with someone who’s annoying, and not easy to work with, and not kind. Yes, nepotism is prevalent, but I think if it actually was what people make it out to be, we’d see even more of it.”

Gerber appears in the newly-released drama Babylon, alongside Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire, and Olivia Wilde. She also stars in the upcoming film Bottoms, directed by Emma Seligman, and in theApple TV+ series Mrs. American Pie, with Laura Dern, Kristen Wiig, and Carol Burnett.
