Funnyman Jay Leno had the fright of his life when he suffered severe burns to his face, chest, and hands earlier this week, but the good news is that he is now expected to be just fine once he’s through with his recovery. On Monday, Leno was working on a 1907 White Steam Car in his personal garage when the vehicle burst into flames. The former Tonight Show host wound up suffering a “mix of deep second and possibly third-degree burns,” but as TMZ reports, Dr. Peter Grossman — who has been treating Leno at the Grossman Burn Center — expects to see his patient make a full recovery.

Leno’s recovery has included undergoing treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, which increases blood flow to the burned areas to reduce swelling and decrease bacteria. The comedian has already undergone one surgery previously to repair his skin and is said to have another one happening sometime this week. As for his spirits, Leno has been “finding time to make a few jokes and pass out cookies to other patients,” now in good condition with the ability to move around freely.

A full recovery doesn’t mean the absence of scarring. Dr. Grossman says the burn scars will most likely remain for the foreseeable future, though there’s a hope that they “won’t remain apparent.” Otherwise, Leno is on the mend, and it’s theorized that the funnyman could be back to work within a couple of months time.

“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,” Leno also told TMZ in a statement following the accident. “I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”
