Helen is a staunch advocate of fresh ingredients for the skin, and what could be more fresh than what you have in your fridge and cupboards at home?

She explains: “Fresh natural ingredients are the kindest to your microbiome (the important microorganisms colonising our skin) as they are materials we have co-evolved with and used to nourish our bodies and skin for thousands of years – these are exactly the kinds of materials you’ll find in our fresh face masks and in your fridge at home.”

And she gives her top tips for rejuvenating facial from ingredients you have right at your fingertips saying: “A blend to make for yourself is simply fine ground oatmeal, honey or agave syrup if you are vegan and soya yoghurt.

“Take half a small cup of oatmeal and make a thick paste of this with the honey or syrup.

“Stir in the yoghurt to make a texture which is good to smooth on to your skin.

“Apply to clean skin, relax for ten minutes then splash water on to the face.

“Massage gently to let the oatmeal softly exfoliate then rinse away and pat dry gently.

“This will leave the skin clean and soft.

“Or go to a Lush store and choose a beautiful fresh mask which we have made for you.”

Helen also believes preservatives in skincare are doing your skin no favours.

She explained: “Preservatives are biocidal ingredients that can be in products for the sake of product stability, not for the sake of your skin.

“They have the potential to alter your microbiome, especially when you consider how many preserved products a customer may apply each day – cleansers, toners, moisturisers, sunscreens and makeup.

“They can also accumulate in our water systems when they are rinsed off the skin, harming aquatic life and having unknown consequences for human health.

“We’ve pioneered ways to minimise our reliance on preservatives by clever formulation and ensuring products are despatched quickly from our factories directly to customers and shops.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRESSURES

“They also have shorter shelf lives so customers get the freshest, most beneficial product for their skin.

“It takes a lot of work on our part but this approach enables us to use minimal amounts of preservative when needed but also to create entirely self-preserving formulations which are formulated to stay fresh without them (preservatives as defined by Annex 5 of the EU Cosmetics Regulations).

“In 2022, around 90 per cent of our core range of products was self-preserving.”

Helen also holds the opinion that the rise of botox and other more invasive anti-aging procedures is a concern, especially for young people.

She explains: “It can’t be denied that the rise in people – especially young people – being sold these procedures is a concern.

“There are so many pressures coming from social media and marketing to look a certain way or to fix so-called ‘flaws’.

NEW LUSH SELF-PRESERVING MOISTURISER

“Even a simple eyebrow shaping exercise at a very young age can define the eyebrow shape for years to come.

“So much of what you think about your skin depends on how you are feeling on that day, in yourself.

“That’s the premise of how we speak to customers in our shops.

“We want to offer reassurance and advice as you navigate the normal stages of life from puberty to menopause and help you find products that will care for your skin in the long-term.”

Lush have also created a new peace self-preserving facial moisturiser which is suitable for all ages and is supremely softening.

Helen said “We were not using this in our facial skincare and I felt we needed to.”

For a lighter feel, you can apply with clean hands to damp skin and let those beautiful ingredients sink in.

Lush have also added this lovely animation to explain what self-preserving is.
