  • Hilary Duff shared the go-to exfoliator she’s sworn by for nearly 10 years.
  • She uses Dr. Lancer’s The Method: Polish three times a week.
  • “It’s my favorite product ever,” she says.

Throughout her 20-plus years in show business, Hilary Duff has tried a lot of skincare products. And although she likes to switch up her routine, there’s one step the actress will never replace.I’m not so tried and true to anything in particular,” she tells Prevention, “except for my Dr. Lancer Polish.”

When Duff thinks about her go-to products, the scrub immediately comes to mind. It’s both a chemical and physical exfoliator (also beloved by Candace Cameron Bure) that contains ultra-fine magnesium oxide quartz crystals and pumpkin and pomegranate enzymes to remove surface debris and encourage dead skin cell turnover. Technically, it’s the first step in Dr. Lancer’s The Method three-step system, but Duff uses it alone.

“It’s my favorite product ever,” she raves. “It’s like a very rough, sandy exfoliant, and I use it dry—like, maybe just a little bit of water on my face. And it’s something I’ve done for … maybe eight years.” She never skips it, but she doesn’t overdo it, either. “Three times a week, I exfoliate with that,” she adds.

The How I Met Your Father star actually credits the scrub for maintaining her glow between facials. “I’m telling you, I hadn’t had a facial in like, three years, and I just got one and I was like, ‘I think I’m a mess. You’re gonna be disgusted. I’m really sorry,’” she recalled. “And they were like, ‘Actually, your skin looks really good. You’re fine.’”

As a mom of three, Duff doesn’t always have time for fancy spa treatments, or even a leisured self-care moment at her bathroom counter. Her kids often come first, which is why she partnered with Walgreens’ Red Nose Day—a fundraiser that she says is “near and dear to my heart” because it provides healthcare access to at-risk children. Even so, the star is diligent about doing something for her skin “every single night and every single morning,” she says, even if that means cleansing while her 1-year-old daughter impatiently tugs at her pant leg.

“My minutes are numbered,” she admits. “[But] if I’m washing my face, I try to like, give a little massage around my jawline and really deep, deep cleanse. I definitely take time to take a little care.”

As for her treatments outside of cleansing, that’s where Duff likes to try new things. “I have sensitive skin, but not like crazy, like I can try new products and experiment,” she explains. “Right now, I’m using all Joanna Vargas products, and I’m loving it. Her Pro Moisturizer is really nice.”

She adds that she’s also using Vargas’ Rejuvenating Serum, which is really a luxurious oil, as well as her retinol-based anti-aging Super Nova Serum. “I’m 34, so I’m aging,” she says. “And so I think most of my stuff is just like, preventative and hydration.” That also includes wearing sunscreen, drinking lots of water, and taking a break and asking for help when she needs it.

“It’s no secret to anybody: The mom is the powerhouse of the family,” she says. And although she’s found confidence in that role, “what I’m giving should be matched,” she adds, which is how she reminds herself to fill up her own cup—be it in the form of an indulgent face mask or an exciting new project. “It’s a space for me to use my brain outside of my kids,” she says of her work. “There’s something very fulfilling about that for me.”
