Four things your cosmetic doctor wants you to know before booking a treatment

Bookings for anti-wrinkle injections and fillers have sky-rocketed following the first lockdown; since the UK lockdown began in March 2020, Save Face has seen a 40 percent rise in people researching treatments.

But while it is easy enough to consider injectable treatments now as slightly elevated facials, and the power of well-placed Botox and filler can knock years off your face in the best possible way, there has also been a huge rise in ‘backstreet Botox’ occurring in lockdown with quite harmful side effects.

We speak to the leading cosmetic expert and the director of the London Academy of Aesthetic Medicine Dr Wassim Taktouk to share his advice on the four things you should consider before booking in for injectables, which can resume when the personal care sector in England reopens on April 12th.

Taktouk is a specialist in anti-wrinkle injections such as Botox, face-sculpting filler, and skin-enhancing treatments such as Profhilo, which improve the appearance of the skin’s texture and tone.

Set your expectations

Don’t use social media screenshots as a guide, advises Dr Taktouk. ‘Social media has a lot to answer for, and it means that some people come in with unrealistic expectations,’ he says. ‘It is essential to work with your own real proportions – you cannot take a pair of lips or cheekbones from a picture and ask for it to be recreated on your face.’

Never book a ‘package’ face

While it’s now commonplace to book in for several treatments at once in a package deal, this is a no-no for Dr Taktouk. ‘Avoid any practices that offer chin filler with your cheek filler, or any sort of packages. You need to sit down and speak to someone with the right aesthetic eye and one syringe in the right hands is better than four syringes in the wrong hands,’ he advises.

‘You can cause serious damage if you don’t go to someone reputable, so make sure you do your research. It’s your face at the end of the day – you don’t need to get it on a “special deal”.’ You can look up doctors on the General Medical Council and dentists on the General Dental Council

The pain factor

With any injectable, Dr Taktouk will numb the area first. Some people may find the treatment slightly uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be painful.

How quickly can you see the results?

Anti-wrinkle injections like Botox ‘take 7-10 days to see an effect, whereas Profhilo – a gentle skin hydrator – is around a week. Filler is immediate.’ Upon reopening after the first lockdown, Dr Taktouk was seeing more patients relating to frown lines than ever before. This can be fixed with Botox, which lasts around 3-4 months at most.
