Christian Siriano Partners With thredUP for Thrifted NYFW Looks


The designer reimagined three pieces from previous collections for his spring/summer 2021 runway show.

Among the many effects of the pandemic, time spent indoors has forced many people to rethink their impact on the environment, especially in the fashion industry, which is responsible for 10 percent of global carbon emissions, per the United Nations Environment Programme. 2020 saw worldwide calls to embrace sustainable clothing and move away from fast fashion. At New York Fashion Week, those ongoing pushes for the fashion industry to go green were spotlighted on designer Christian Siriano’s runway.

At this year’s virtual spring/summer fashion week, Siriano sent three thrifted looks down the runway in partnership with consignment company thredUP (whose stated mission includes “extending the life of clothes.”)

“The ups and downs of this year led me to rethink my next collection as an optimistic vision of how we’ll dress post-pandemic,” Siriano says. The 2011 Project Runway winner is a favorite among celebrities on the red carpet; he dressed Rosie Perez at the 2021 Golden Globes, Alicia Silverstone at the 2020 Oscars and Billy Porter’s iconic 2019 Oscars tuxedo gown. “I chose to put thrifted looks from thredUP on the runway because I believe reuse will define the future of our industry. I hope my collection inspires other designers to create garments that can be worn again and again.”

For this collaboration, Siriano pulled three pieces from his own past collections found on thredUP.com: a pink silk dress, a mid-length mesh dress and a coat with flair and fringe. All three pieces were altered and reimagined before returning to the runway during Siriano’s Feb. 25 show. For example, a two-inch black band was added to the sleeves and bottom of the pink dress.

“Ten years ago, we could never have imagined that an iconic industry event like New York Fashion Week would proudly display used clothes alongside new,” says Erin Wallace, vp of integrated marketing at thredUP. “We are thrilled to see a barrier-breaking designer like Christian use his runway to illustrate the importance of reuse. This paves the way for more designers to embrace their past designs and promote a more sustainable future for fashion.”
