44.5 billion dollars – that was the market size for the global plastic surgery industry back in 2020, and it’s expected to grow in the next decade. We’re all aware of how common cosmetic surgery is in our society, and it’s sad that so many women are feeling the need to go under the knife to fit into a “beauty standard.” In Hollywood, many celebrities have gotten work done to look picture-perfect for the cameras, but it seems there’s a large number of stars who are actually against getting work done on themselves. Here are some of the most influential women who have spoken out against Botox and cosmetic surgery.

Jennifer Aniston

The Friends star told InStyle in 2014, “I believe in ‘no-tox.’ It absolutely distorts people’s faces and you end up actually having the opposite effect. You look older, in my opinion, when you can’t move and don’t let your natural expressions have their way.”

Julia Roberts

In 2012, the Pretty Woman fave admitted to trying botox but said that she wasn’t pleased with the results. “I tried the Botox one time and was permanently surprised for a couple [of] months. It was not a cute look for me.” While she doesn’t want it for herself, she doesn’t shame others for getting it. “It’s whatever works for the person,” she said. “I don’t want to judge somebody who can’t turn their head or move their lips. I don’t know — if you want your chin on your forehead, I’m not one to judge. If that’s going to bring you joy, I’m all for it.”

Emilia Clarke

In an interview with Elle, the Game of Thrones fan-favorite said that cosmetic surgery is the “worst skincare advice.” Clarke says that she’s proud of the aging process and wants to show off its natural beauty. “You’ve got this idea of aging, and then you’ve got the idea of what aging makes you look like. At 34, I am wiser, more intelligent, I’ve had more experiences, I’ve done all this stuff, and I’m proud of that. You can only do that because you are the age you are. Time is the only thing allows you to do those things. So, if my face is gonna reflect the time that I’ve spent on this earth, I’m down for that.”

Pink

The rockstar mom says she “can’t get behind” plastic surgery. In Pink’s 2020 open letter to herself on aging, she wrote: “Dear Me, you’re getting older. I see lines. Especially when you smile. Your nose is getting bigger… You look (and feel) weird as you get used to this new reality.”

Julianne Moore

The 47-year-old red-headed beauty told Observer Magazine that Botox doesn’t make you look “younger,” but that it just makes it look like you got “work done.” “You are not going to look the same as you did at 25,” she said. “What are you going to do about it?”

Salma Hayek

When Hayek uploaded a selfie in 2021, fans accused her of getting work done. She decided to address the rumors, claiming she hasn’t done anything. “I haven’t done an-y-thing. I don’t know how to explain it.” When she did try to get Botox, she had to call it quits as the needle came close to her mouth. “No! Forget it! I’m done,” she told her dermatologist.

Jodie Foster

Foster told More in 2007 that Botox wasn’t exactly “her thing.” “Like, I’d rather have somebody go, ‘Wow, that girl has a big nose’ than ‘Wow, that girl has a bad nose job,'” the Contact star said. “I’d rather have a comment about who I am than about something that identifies me as being ashamed of who I am.”

Kate Winslet

In 2011, the Titanic celebrity told The Telegraph that cosmetic work goes against her beliefs. “I will never give in,” she said. “I am an actress, I don’t want to freeze the expression of my face.”

Mandy Moore

When rumors started to circulate about Mandy Moore getting plastic surgery, she was surprised: “I was like, ‘That’s weird — my nose is pretty imperfect.’ I have a crinkled part underneath the bridge of my nose and I remember laughing like, ‘I feel like I would have fixed that had I had a nose job.’ I don’t know, maybe it was just a weird picture or weird makeup or shading or something. People think everyone in Hollywood has had a nose job or some work done, but it’s not always true. People are going to believe what they want, and that’s fine. And if having work done is going to make somebody feel better about themselves, then more power to them.”

Kylie Minogue

While the singer has admitted to using Botox in the past, she looks more natural these days. “I don’t [get botox] anymore, I won’t go near it. I have lines. You can see the lines on my face,” she said.

Nicole Kidman

In 2011, Kidman admitted to getting Botox, but she eventually stopped. “I didn’t like how my face looked afterwards,” she explained. “Now I don’t use it anymore — I can move my forehead again.”

Closing Thoughts

With more celebrities talking about the unnatural look that Botox gives, is it possible that more women will embrace the aging process? While I do believe it’s beneficial to focus on improving our skin for aesthetic (and health) purposes, it’s unfortunate that the beauty industry has made us obsessed with battling wrinkles and loose skin. The process of getting older should be worn as a badge, it’s something to be proud of. This is not to say that women who get work done should be demonized. What I am saying, however, is that aging is a beautiful process that we should all learn to embrace.
