But Canadian brand Ember Wellness is looking to challenge the overarching immiscibility idea with their two-step approach to skin-care products.

The company offers a curated lineup of five facial oils and matching floral facial waters, each designed to “draw moisture into the skin and seal it in,” according to brand founder Amanda Schuler.

We recently caught up with Schuler to learn more:

Q: For those who aren’t familiar, what is Ember Wellness?

A: Ember Wellness is a collection of beautiful, clean, supportive skin-care products, all carefully designed to be part of one’s self-care ritual. The collection includes five cold-pressed organic facial oils and five pure, 100 per cent natural hydrating flower water facial sprays, called hydrosols. Used together, the cold-pressed oil combinations and matching hydrosol facial sprays simultaneously draw moisture into the skin and seal it in. The process of combining oil and water is the perfect everyday ritual for radiant skin with vitality — synergistically honouring the skin’s natural barrier. To complement the skin-care collection, we have signature facial tools, including a heart-shaped facial Gua Sha, a cloud-shaped body Gua Sha, a facial cupping set, a Konjac Sponge, and a portable Rejuvenating Light Therapy Mask for fine lines wrinkles, pigmentation, redness and acne.

Q: What makes it unique?

A: Ember Wellness is the first skin-care company to combine two oils, in each of our five formulations, instead of a myriad of oils and other ingredients often used, for a simple and targeted approach to our customers’ skin-care needs. We believe in radical transparency, and we’re also one of the first companies to publish the percentage of each ingredient in each formula — and we’ll continue to be even more transparent as the brand grows. We know that customers are more and more interested in shopping with brands with transparent business practices. Our approach to sustainability also makes us unique; it’s the heart of what we do. We use ingredients that are sustainably sourced from fair trade co-ops to recyclable packaging and a partnership with TerraCycle. The company has also started the Alchemy Fund, with a portion of its sales going back to nourishing the planet and its inhabitants.

Q: Who is the target customer?

A: Our customers are interested in natural and alternative therapies, and cruelty-free products. The customer might have tried a 10-step routine in the past but is now trying to pare it down to the basics. They also might have some knowledge of the skin barrier and how important it is to honour it and preserve it by doing less, not more.

Q: Is there a ‘hero’ product in the line? If so, which one and what makes it so popular?

A: The most popular product in the collection is our 02 DUO, which is made up of both the 02 facial oil and 02 hydrosol. I think because the 02 facial oil, with its combination of 50 per cent plum kernel and 50 per cent grapeseed oil, makes it a natural UV inhibitor and thus it has been doing well for us, especially during this spring-summer season. The 02 hydrosol, which is the other part of the 02 DUO, is made from 100 per cent pure Rose Otto plant water.

Q: What is the price range for your products?

A: The collection ranges from $28 to $38 for the hydrosols to $38 to $58 for the facial oils. And the beauty tools range from $18 for the Konjac sponge to $58 for the Gua Sha tools. The Rejuvenating Light Therapy Mask retails for $425.

Q: And where can people check them out?

A: The collection is available on our website emberwellness.ca, as well as through SSENSE and Indigo.
