In the 1990s the craze was for Botox to smooth away wrinkles. A decade later a Brazilian butt lift was all the rage. Now another plastic surgery procedure is having a social media-fuelled moment.
Buccal fat (pronounced buckle) is found in the cheeks. By extracting some of it surgeons can give a patient a leaner, more angular look as if they were sucking through a straw.
The procedure, which costs between £2,500 and £4,000, has been around for at least 45 years, but Google searches for “buccal fat” rose more than thirtyfold in the UK this month. Marc Pacifico, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said that Instagram was fuelling interest.
