Fillers are often associated with plumped lips and chiselled cheekbones, but its uses extend far beyond these commonly discussed areas of treatment. As we age, we lose volume in our faces, which causes skin to droop and sag, and changes the appearance of our overall facial structure. We also lose collagen and elasticity in our skin, which contributes to fine and deep wrinkles. In a clinic setting, fillers are one of the most popular treatments used by doctors to help treat the appearance of these effects and rejuvenate the overall appearance of ageing skin.

As surgeon, cosmetic doctor and S-Thetics clinic director Sherina Balaratnam explains, most of her patients desire subtle, natural-looking changes, which is why she favours Juvéderm. “Its range of fillers has been designed to integrate seamlessly with patients’ skin and facial structures to produce natural-looking results,” she explains.

Of course, every patient, and therefore every treatment plan, is different. “I always carry out a facial assessment on each patient, in static and dynamic positions, to identify which areas are showing signs of ageing,” says Balaratnam. But there are some key methods that are commonly used by practitioners. Below are three effective ways doctors can use facial filler to course-correct signs of ageing.

1. For brow and eye rejuvenation

“Ageing around the eye area is a common concern with my patients,” says Balaratnam. “Juvéderm can be used deep in the temple and outer cheekbone areas to raise the brow and give the eyes a more awake appearance.

“Juvéderm Volbella may then be used to gently restore volume in the under-eye and tear-trough region. The overall effect is of looking refreshed and less tired.”

2. To restore lost volume and reduce wrinkles

“Wrinkles may be due to loss of volume, such as in the temples and cheeks, which causes lines in the crow’s-feet area,” says Balaratnam. “To address this, Juvéderm fillers can be used in a layered approach to restore volume to the face, which in turn lifts folds or wrinkles, making it smoother in appearance.”

Neck lines and the labial folds around the mouth, known as smile lines, can also be injected with filler to make their appearance less visible and create a smoother, more even skin surface.

3. For under-the-skin hydration

Volite is a dermal filler used to treat fine lines and enhance skin quality by improving hydration and elasticity. “Juvéderm Volite uses a hyaluronic acid formula that is injected into the deeper layers of the skin, to hydrate from within,” explains Balaratnam.

“I use this treatment on patients over 40 as it replaces the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid, which we lose as we age. Over time, they can expect to see increasing luminosity, hydration and overall improvement of skin quality.”
